The Idea Behind the Legacy
In 1888, Alfred Nobel opened a newspaper to read his obituary. It was a mistake, of course, but the story quickly spread. Nobel was condemned as a “merchant of death” for his invention of dynamite and for getting rich by finding “new ways to kill more people faster.” Horrified at the public’s opinion of him, Nobel rewrote his will creating a Foundation to recognize the highest achievements in science, literature and peacemaking through annual cash prizes in his name. Today, Alfred Nobel is celebrated as a great humanitarian.
Like Nobel, each of us wishes to make a mark in the world and be remembered, if only by our loved ones. Between 2006-2007, both my parents died. Thoughts of my mother and father and their legacy dominated my mind. I searched for books and websites on the subject of legacy and could only find information on how to write a legacy or how to leave a legacy at work or in your careet. I was searching for a book or website with a broader horizon and a deeper meaning–how to live a life worthy of a legacy.
A long-time freelance writer, I suggested an article to San Diego Magazine and “What Is Your Legacy” appeared in the October 2007 issue. But writing those articles only whetted my appetite. I wanted to learn more. I made up a Wish List of several hundred Americans of genuine distinction from all walks of life, including science, business, public service, academia, the arts, the media, and sports. Having worked in public relations and in the media for more than 20 years, five of them in radio as an on-air business reporter in San Diego, I’m comfortable interviewing people and getting them to talk.
My two criteria for selecting individuals for the Legacy website are: 1) Have they done something “out of the ordinary” 2) Have they “raised people up”? Are they acting in good faith to help others reach their goals in life?
I encourage you to read the legacies of the notable Americans highlighted on this website. If you know someone who would make a good candidate for the website as well as how to contact them, please let me know.
